Biography
Date of Birth :1949-07
Gender : Male

In 1970, Gary Williams began work as a staff photographer, for a new Spanish newspaper, El Nuevo Dia in San Juan, P.R., the start of a 42-year career in photojournalism.
During that time he covered the entire gamut of Puerto Rican life, from politics to sports to crime to culture.
In 1978 he was awarded the King of Spain award for news photography for a multi-frame sequence of photos showing circus superstar Karl Wallenda, patriarch of the Flying Wallendas, as he fell to his death during a high-wire performance between two hotels in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Williams has been nominated three times for a Pulitzer Prize and was runner-up two times for a body of work done in Haiti during election riots in 1980's.
He has also won other national and international awards for his photography which has been published around the world in newspapers, magazines, books and on the Internet.
In 1972 he became the main photo stringer/editor for the Associated Press in the Caribbean, where he remained until he joined the management team of El Nuevo Dia as the Director of Digital Imaging in 1991.
He was responsible for a team of talented people who took on the unknown task (at the time) of digitizing their large daily workflow.
That cutting edge technology - such as Mac Desktop publishing and digital cameras - gave us the ability to achieve superfast remote digital transmissions for the paper.
In 2001 Gary retired from El Nuevo Dia and has relocated to Tucson, Arizona, with his family. He is now shooting freelance for several international photo agencies, such as EFE of Spain, EPA of Germany, and Getty Images. © All photographs by Gary Williams Photography and El Nuevo Dia are protected by copyright law.
